Professor Shadel is an associate professor of Law at the University of Virginia. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and earned her JD from Columbia University, where she was a note editor on the Columbia Law Review and a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. After graduation, she clerked for Judge Eugene H. Nickerson of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She was a litigation associate with the law firm of Covington & Burling in New York when the 9/11 attacks occurred, and wanted to serve her country. She joined the U.S. Department of Justice as an attorney in the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review, where she represented the United States on terrorism-related matters before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
